Mentor: Dr. Abby Wu

Jennis Hu & Amy Wen

On 21/7/2025, we were honoured to shadow Dr Abby Wu, a specialist in orthodontics at Amazing Brace Orthodontics. She began with a clinic tour, explaining the functions of key equipment such as X-ray machines and polishing devices. Observing her consultations with two patients in the morning, we admired her meticulous care—in adjusting and tightening rubber bands on one patient’s braces and assessing another’s overbite improvement. What inspired us was her warm approach to patients. She put them at ease by discussing their daily lives and recent trips, as well as reassuring them about their treatment progress.

Dr Wu also shared extensive knowledge by showing us computer simulations and demonstrating treatments such as orthodontic expansion, tooth extraction, and specialized appliances (Hyrax, Biobloc, distal jet). She stressed that early intervention is essential and taught us proper specialised brushing techniques for braces. Additionally, she showcased models of Invisalign, ceramic braces, and metal braces, detailing how customised bracket and wire placement optimize alignment.

We were truly grateful for Dr Wu’s enthusiasm in answering our questions and for her patience and kindness. We were fortunate to gain insights from her into orthodontic training, workplace dynamics, and career prospects. This immersive experience deepened our appreciation for the field and reinforced our passion for pursuing dentistry in the future. We are profoundly grateful to Dr Wu for her generosity and mentorship, which served as an inspiration to us all.

My job-shadowing experience with Dr. Arthur Sham at Hing Man Estate Clinic on 22 August was incredibly insightful. I observed the daily workflow of a general dentist, from patient consultations and diagnoses to dental cleanings. What stood out to me most was his exceptional communication with patients. He explains dental procedures clearly and with a calm demeanor that immediately puts anxious patients at ease. Being empathetic and patient is what I strive to be when working in the dental field in the future.

This opportunity also solidified my expectations for a dental career. Dr. Sham’s dedication was inspiring, as he demonstrated a fulfilling career that also allows for a strong work-life balance, proving that one can excel as a dentist while having time for other pursuits. This experience has greatly motivated me to pursue my own path in dentistry.

Mentor: Dr. Wong Irisa Bianca

Season Chiu & Kristin Leung

For our job shadowing experience, we observed our mentor, Dr. Wong, at Vee Dental Clinicon 27 July 2025. We watched Dr. Wong perform several dental procedures, including tooth extractions, fillings for abrasion cavities, root canal treatments, and more. Her precise and careful technique during these treatments was impressive. We were amazed by the level of precision and skill required to locate the initial implant hidden under the gums. This invaluable experience gave us a deeper appreciation for the technical abilities necessary in dentistry and helped us understand the importance of improving hands-on skills as dentists.

In addition to observing clinical work, we noted how crucial communication is in a dental practice. Dr. Wong clearly explained the treatment options to the patient and her family and ensured they understood the procedures involved when the patient was hesitant about extraction due to aesthetic concerns. During her explanation to the patient, Dr. Wong demonstrated professionalism, and through this, we learned the importance of effective communication between dentist and patient, and that being a dentist goes beyond skills and knowledge.

Overall, this invaluable experience deepened our understanding of dentistry. This opportunity has inspired us to consider dental care seriously as a future career path.

Mentor: Dr Meika Cheong

Callie Kwok

My experience shadowing Dr. Cheong was an inspiring eye-opener to the field of dentistry and reinforced my passion.

Observing dental procedures, such as fillings, taking teeth impressions for dentures, and X-ray imaging, deepened my interest. I was particularly amazed by Dr. Cheong’s polished skills, which made a tooth extraction seem effortless.

Beyond clinical work, I admire Dr. Cheong’s commitment to serving Hong Kong’s underprivileged communities, including refugees and ethnic minorities, through nonprofit work. I aspire to follow her example and balance clinical practice with community service.

Between patients, we discussed trends in dentistry, from digital advancements to social changes, as well as her career journey: graduating, entering private practice, and opening her own clinic.

Dentistry requires exceptional fine motor skills as well as adept communication, especially with the elderly and with children. Going forward, I am inspired to sharpen my hand–eye coordination and continue volunteering in cross-age settings.

Thank you for this invaluable experience.
