Mentor: Ms. Anson So (Healing Hands Physiotherapy Centre)

Stephanie Chow, Vickie Lin, Jodis Tang

On 7/8/2025, we had the opportunity to visit Ms. So at Healing Hands Physiotherapy Centre. Ms. So provided us with valuable insights into the role of a physiotherapist, introducing us to various therapeutic methods, such as ultrasound therapy, that help patients recover physically. We were able to experience ultrasound therapy and electrotherapy, which was a truly unique experience. Ms. So also guided us through some challenges physiotherapists may face, for example being told off by patients or having to make contact with unhygienic patients, and the essential mindsets and attitudes needed to tackle these difficulties.

Apart from learning from Ms. So, during the job shadowing session we also met senior physiotherapy students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, who shared their experiences and firsthand insights into the programme. They explained its structure, core modules like anatomy and physiology, and the diverse placement opportunities in local clinical settings and abroad. Their sharing and advice helped us gain a deeper understanding of the subject and prepared us for university applications.

Through this job shadowing experience, we not only gained valuable exposure to the daily hurdles of a physiotherapist, but also obtained detailed information about the career path. After this experience, we are able to affirm our interest in, and unwavering determination to pursue, this area.

During our job shadowing experience at Healing Hands Physiotherapy Centre under the mentorship of Mr Kenneth Au-Yeung, we had the chance to seek advice from our mentor and communicate with Year 3 university students from PolyU. During our conversation, they not only shared an overview of the four-year curriculum and their experience as physiotherapy students, but they also mentioned the key factors that contribute to becoming a successful physiotherapist.

During the visit, we observed the process of S/E, which is part of patient assessment, and we watched cupping therapy performed on a patient with upper back pain. Moreover, our mentor let us try out some equipment in the centre that is used for different kinds of therapy.

Our mentor gave us a comprehensive introduction to different specialties in physiotherapy, including neurology, cardiopulmonary, paediatric, geriatric, sports, and orthopaedics. Meanwhile, the interns shared about university life, for instance, the content covered in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy course at PolyU and how they prepared for this career path.

Mentor: Dr. Benson Cheng

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Benson Cheng for mentoring us at Virtus Kagina Physiotherapy Centre on 18 July 2025.

We had the valuable opportunity to observe treatments for several patients, including shockwave therapy, acupuncture, and electrotherapy. Dr. Cheng gave us a detailed overview of each patient’s condition, and the respective treatments offered. One notable case involved a patient suffering from plantar fasciosis, who was treated with shockwave therapy and radiotherapy to alleviate pain and swelling in the leg muscles.

We were in awe of the precise techniques used by Dr. Cheng and the advanced machinery in the clinic. We also admired how Dr. Cheng communicated and monitored recovery, ensuring each patient felt relieved and reassured after the physiotherapy session. The unique backstory of why Dr. Cheng chose to pursue physiotherapy was also shared, and it greatly intrigued us and further ignited our passion for the field.

Overall, we are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Cheng and the clinical staff firsthand through job shadowing, which has made us more interested in pursuing this rewarding profession.
