Sammi Chiang
Job shadowing in JCIHK was a valuable experience. I worked as an event assistant in this two-day job shadowing programme. This experience definitely introduces me into the industry of NGOs and gives me insights in organizing functions in a large scale.
I worked at the JCIHK office on the 30th and 31st July. On my first day, I was introduced to the office and the structure of this organization. It was enlightening to me to hear that the organization has 21 chambers around Hong Kong, each with members working voluntarily in organizing both local and international functions outside of their working hour. Famous events such as The Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection is organized by JCIHK each year.
I was asked to tidy up the conference rooms as a head start. As there was no event holding in the near future during my job shadowing, I was given different secretarial tasks including exporting word documents to PDF, combining PDF files into one, managing files on the desktop and printing agendas and minutes, as well as administrative tasks such as filing and selling exclusive items to members.
My taste of work at the JCIHK office ended on the first day as there was typhoon on the second day and I was asked to go home due to safety concerns. However, I did learn a lot from this experience and I came to the realization that the job nature of an event organiser requires high level of multi-tasking. The above-mentioned workloads were shared among two employees, yet there are many other responsibilities taken up by them, such as liaising with sponsors and other parties.

Mentor: Ms. Fanny Yip (Pearson)
Siena Lung
This was my first attempt in job shadowing and working as an intern in Pearson office. It’s my pleasure to be involved and participate in the sales department of Pearson. On the first day, my mentor introduced how different departments works. Throughout the four days, my mentor and other staffs in the department taught and guided me patiently. I was assigned a task in counting and checking the inventory of different types of educational resources, such as textbooks, fictions and examination guides, which is highly related to the business and accounting courses at school. I had a great time in inventory checking and categorizing various books, although it was only a minor task compare to other’s work, I have learnt its importance and significance in business operations. For example, my work helped to organize the resources to make it easier and more convenient for other staffs to seek for the stock of each book.
Furthermore, I enjoyed hearing about work experiences from different staffs, as well as getting to know the structure of a company. Their sharing are really interesting and had given me lots of inspiration in my future career. I even met some graduated Paulinians who have been working in Pearson! This job shadowing experience was meaningful and significant to me, it had surely widened my knowledge and broaden my horizons in this business world.

Mentor: Ms Jacqueline Wong & Mr Eric Poon (Sogo – Retail)

In our two days job shadowing experience in Sogo, we were given the opportunity to work as a sales. A brief introduction on the firm itself was given in the beginning, allowing us to have a better grasp on what we were going to encounter and what the firm really do in general. We were assigned to the 10/F, in which is the home appliances section, and given tasks like issuing citations, help out with packaging of products and helping out customers in general. We were also very honored to have an opportunity where we can communicate with the staff of the HR Department, having a better understanding on its tasks.
The job shadowing experience at Sogo is undeniably a fruitful and rewarding activity for us. We have gained relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience while establishing important connections in the field. This experience provides a nice learning platform for us to observe various aspects of business retailing thus strengthens our passion and determinism to pursue the business pathway for our future career. Participating in this job shadowing program is a great way to get a taste of the actual professional experience in a particular field before we commit ourselves to it fully in the future. We have not only learned about workplace culture but also employee relations and leadership structure, which I believe will help us onboard in our first professional job with more ease.

On 22nd August, 2019, we had the opportunity to join the Job Shadowing programme, jointly organized by SPCS and the Sogo Investment Division. We had the chance to speak with Ms. Jacqueline Wong, a member of the investment division in Sogo. She shared her past experiences and provided advice on our future plans. Her experiences have given us insight on investment and finance. We have learnt a lot about the stock exchange market and investment products, such as equity securities and bonds.
In the afternoon, we had the chance to meet the Head of CEO’s office, Ms. Ivy Lam. She shared her thoughts about studying business in Hong Kong and overseas. She also provided enlightenment on her occupation and her studies. We really appreciate their strong and helpful advice, and it is definitely worth considering. We were inspired about investment and we believe this may help our further studies in business and finance.

Mentor: Ms. Lila Ng (Trumptech Education Group)
Renee Chan, Rachel Chen & Anna Tsoi
From the 14th to the 18th of August, we were given a valuable job shadowing opportunity at Trumptech Education Group. Under the guidance of Ms Lila Ng and Ms Rosa Ho, we had a fruitful and fascinating experience, by which we witnessed the daily routine in the business world.
On the first day, we had a tour around the office and learned about the fundamental operations of the organisation. For instance, we had a sharing sessions with the Human Resources staff to learn about their duties in maintaining a healthy working environment and ensuring employees’ welfare.
Moreover, we also talked to personnel from different departments in the company, such as the Outreach department and Business development department, by which we got to know more about the roles they play in diversifying the company’s products. We also had the chance to engage in hands-on experience. For example, we practiced using sales negotiation skills with the Sales department team members. Through this experience, it not only allowed us a deeper and clearer understanding of the roles of each department, but it also helped us enhance our communication skills and critical thinking skills.
Apart from this, our meeting with the CEO of the company also provided invaluable insights into our future paths as he shared with us the company’s mission to nurture the society’s young minds and equip them with problem solving skills.
All in all, this job-shadowing experience was an eye opening and rewarding experience for all of us to learn more about business and education. We deeply appreciate our school for providing us with such precious learning opportunity.
