Engineering and Technology
Mentor: Ms Kiki Kam
Agnes Au & Alina Lee
From our two-week job-shadowing experience at Hitachi Rail, we observed the work of a software engineer at a railway company. Our mentor and her team are responsible for building the programs used in the MTR station, such as the system used to control airflow and humidity. We learnt that there are many stages in creating a program, from defining the project to the implementation and, finally, testing and use.
Our task during the two weeks was to organise the human-machine interface (HMI) using Figma and FactoryTalk. Although the task was mainly repetitive, we could grasp some of the work of a software engineer that we can handle at our skill level, not requiring too many technical skills.
Overall, this job shadowing experience gave us a comprehensive understanding of computer engineering.
Mentor: Tencent
Jocelyn Lee & Angel Lam
We participated in a job shadowing program offered by Tencent from July 4th to 5th, 2024. During the two-day program, we visited the Tencent offices in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, which allowed us to interact with mentors from various Tencent departments, including computer engineers and human resources managers. We learned about Tencent's businesses, mission, and core values, which are centred around "Value for Users, Tech for Good."
Apart from the chance to tour Tencent's working environments, we engaged in a group project to leverage Tencent's advanced technologies to devise a solution for the problem of an ageing population. After discussing the challenges with different mentors, we delivered a presentation to elaborate on our proposed solution and received positive feedback.
The program gave us valuable insights into Tencent's operations and approach to problem-solving through innovation. As a novice aspiring to a career in the technology industry, this experience was truly eye-opening and significantly shaped our understanding of the skills and mindset required to succeed in the dynamic technology field.
Besides, interacting with mentors from diverse departments gave us a well-rounded perspective on Tencent's operations. The program taught us that technological innovation would not happen in isolation. Different teams with complementary expertise must work closely before launching a product.
We are grateful for the opportunity to have gained such valuable insights. This job shadowing experience gave us a deeper understanding of computer engineering in the technology industry.
