Thanks to the arrangement made by the Careers Team, I had the privilege to participate in a job shadowing experience at MODUL University Vienna in July 2024. During this time, I gained valuable insights into the daily operations of the university and its marketing team.

I was warmly welcomed by my mentor and her colleagues, who were genuinely committed to supporting my learning experience. My mentor, Ms. Ng Sze Wan, was exceptionally patient in answering my questions, which enabled me to have a deeper understanding of the company’s work processes and her role. This first-hand observation provided me with a comprehensive picture of the industry and showed me the skills required to succeed in this field.

Overall, this job shadowing experience has been enriching and enjoyable, which further solidifies my interest in pursuing a career in a similar field. I am thankful for the guidance and hospitality extended to me throughout this valuable learning experience.

Mentor: Kai Shing Management Services Limited

Mieyang Ling

I was granted a job attachment opportunity via ERB (Employees Retraining Board) as a Club Assistant under Kai Shing Management Services during the summer break. This six-day work experience not only made me reflect on my future direction but also taught me how to overcome challenges and frustrations when facing unfamiliar tasks. I also developed resilience and problem-solving skills.

Besides, I learnt how to communicate effectively with my colleagues. For example, a collaborative mindset fosters good relationships and creates a supportive working environment. I learnt how to interact with guests, such as greeting them warmly and offering patient assistance while answering phone calls. This experience enhanced my customer service skills and taught me how to create a welcoming atmosphere. Most importantly, I learnt to treat mistakes as an opportunity to learn and improve.

I have a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to work, learn, and grow through this experience. Each lesson has contributed to my personal and professional development.

Throughout my week-long job shadowing with the Pearson portfolio team, I gained valuable insights into the intricate workings of a leading educational publishing company. Observing the team’s daily operations, such as content creation and product development, ignited my passion for the education sector and piqued my interest in the business side of the industry.

I was particularly impressed by the team’s collaborative approach and their dedication to delivering high-quality and innovative learning materials for students globally. Observing the research, data analysis, and cross-functional coordination involved in each project was an eye-opening experience. Additionally, the exposure to the team’s strategic planning processes and global market consideration has deepened my understanding of the complexities involved in educational publishing.

This experience has undoubtedly strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in educational technology or publishing. I am grateful for the opportunity to gain such practical and first-hand knowledge.

Mentor: United Prime Educational Publishing (HK) Limited

Hebe Wan

I gained valuable experience as a marketing assistant at the booth of United Prime Educational Publishing (HK) Limited during the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair 2024.

Given the opportunity to communicate with potential customers in the gift department, I learnt to be more proactive and responsive. Furthermore, instead of being disheartened by rejections, I persevered to fulfil my responsibilities, which taught me an important lesson: determination is the key to success.

Under the guidance of UPEP employees, I gained a better understanding of the daily operations of an on-site marketing team. This experience further fuelled my interest in applying for university programmes related to business administration, which would provide me with more comprehensive knowledge in the field.

Overall, I enjoyed the fruitful job shadowing experience and look forward to pursuing a career in a related field in the future.

During my one-week job shadowing at UPE Publishing, I had the opportunity to observe the process of book publishing from research to content creation. I also sorted books and orders using spreadsheet software. I was deeply moved by the staff’s unyielding commitment to the education field and I am grateful to have been part of the team.

Throughout the week, I realized the significance of teamwork in sales administration. We handled numerous orders daily and we worked as a team to efficiently sort orders based on subject, level, and school location.

Mentors: Ms. Monica Ng, Mr. Kenneth Chan, Ms. Fion Ho (WonderHerb, a Health Supplement Company)

Stephanie Lee & Maggie Ng

During the week-long job shadowing (22-26 July 2024) at Wonder Herb, we had the opportunity to experience working in the business field.

On the first day, our mentors gave us a detailed introduction to the firm, allowing us to better understand its products. We were assigned tasks and brainstormed ideas for a marketing campaign.

Throughout the week, we designed four leaflets, registered an Instagram account, filmed a short video, and improved the functionality and design of a webpage. The experience taught us the importance of highlighting the needs of the clients when advertising products, and we honed our creativity in the process.

We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to shadow at a health supplement company. It was a rewarding experience that has equipped us with valuable skills for our future.
