Mentor: Ms. Sonia Lee (All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd)

Veronica Wong, Natalie Yeung

Job shadowing under All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd has been a fruitful experience and it is a precious opportunity for students who are interested in the business field. We have acquired great insights into the running of a global and successful airline company.

On the 8th and 9th August 2018, we were fortunate to job-shadow at All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd (ANA). This two-day job shadowing opportunity has undoubtedly provided us with invaluable airline operation exposure.

On the first day, we explored the airport and tried to understand various airport operations. For example, what the ANA employees should do in the arrival hall, what to do to make sure if there is any departure preparation needed, how to help customers check-in and what to prepare in the boarding gate. Cecilia, our mentor for the day, addressed that the employees were required to hold up a small notice board in order to guide the arriving customers to the VIP room or to the arrival hall. We felt that such etiquette-based communication is very imperative and that it is something that other airline companies should practice.

On the second day, we were brought to the cargo station of ANA. Official employees introduced us to the operation of the cargo department. We even got to see the ramp handling operator which is a rare sight and an exceptional experience since it is not an operation we would see in our daily lives. Then, we were taken to the ANA company in Tsim Sha Tsui. Not only we were able to apply our business and economics knowledge and gain practical experience in the general affairs department, we also got to know more about a possible career that we may pursue in the future. Apart from that, we elevated our knowledge towards the work ethics of a Japanese company. We noticed that all the staffers are very knowledgeable, friendly, and also practice excellent manners. All employees were arranged to sit together, there were no rooms for the manger for each department except the executive manager. We were able to realize the importance of team work, and the meaning of “actions speak louder than words”.

At the end of each day, we were able to ask our mentors questions that had developed throughout the day. We realized that we must learn to pose problems and questions, in order to make a project more feasible. It is integral to be able to adapt business operations in a dynamic and constantly changing market conditions. We deeply appreciate our school for providing us with this priceless learning opportunity.

Our three days job shadowing experience at Bee’s Diamonds is definitely rewarding and fruitful. Not only did we gain insight in the field of business, we also got to know more about the future career that we may pursue.

Thanks to Mr Wong and Ms Yiu for their generous help and guidance throughout these three days. We were able to apply our accounting and economic knowledge into the work they have given us. We have also got insight to the practical side of operating a business. For example, we have learnt how a company get the recognition and attention of their target audience across a wide range of markets.

Working at Bee’s Diamonds was definitely a rewarding experience. Not only were we able to apply our accounting knowledge and gain practical experience at book-keeping when assisting the accountant, Mr Wong. We also got to know more about a possible career that we may pursue in the future.

Futhermore, we are lucky enough to have Mr. Bee, the owner of the company to teach us how to distinguish several types of diamonds under a microscope. We value this experience so much and we, as students, learn to adapt, engage in active learning and be prepared for every possible opportunity in the future.

Mentor: Ms. Oicy Tong (CEO of Four Seas Global Food Co., Ltd)

Eunice Cho & Martha Yeung

On 26th and 27th July, we were given a precious opportunity to job shadow Ms Oicy Tong, CEO of Four Seas Global Food Co., Ltd. By shadowing Ms Tong, we got the chance to have an in-depth overview of a CEO’s day-to-day work, a deeper understanding towards the agenda of meetings in a well-established company and gain insights into a company’s operation.

Ms Tong shared with us the story of her company and gave us much meaningful advice, such as living like a traveller. The idea of being observant in daily lives is so important to an entrepreneur as it brings us new and creative ideas. The valuable advice fosters our innovative thinking and helps us to adapt into new environments. Tasks were also given to us which gave us a hands-on learning experience. We learned a lot of practical skills in managing a team and found the importance of being proactive in asking questions.

This two-day shadowing experience is wonderful and will definitely benefit our future.

Mentor: Ms. Jennifer Leung (Divisional Merchandising Manager, LF Asia Direct)

Ophelia Sum & Kandace Li

On 25th July, 2018, I was fortunate to undergo job shadowing progam in Li and Fung’s Corporate team. Under the mentorship of Ms Leung, we had a deeper understanding on marketing techniques and how supply chain works. She shared with us what Li and Fung is aiming in future: to digitize the supply chain using new technologies, e.g. 3Dsampling and intranet. Furthermore, Ms Leung reinforced the importance of keeping up ‘on track’ with the current market, and gave us some insight of the practical work as a supply chain agent.

Also, Ms Leung shared with us how wide-ranged career opportunities can be. She told us her working experience and what kind of qualities employers were looking for in fresh graduates. Therefore, taking her advice, I will value different job experiences and think carefully for future career choices. Lastly, I deeply  appreciate our school for giving us this amazing learning opportunity.

Mentor: Ms. Stefanie Schmith (Product Development Department, LF Asia Direct)

Denise Au, Jessica Leung & Tanya Poh

On 13-17 August 2018, we were given a precious opportunity to job shadow at the Product Development of LF Sourcing. Under the guidance of our mentor, Miss Stefanie Schmith and her team, we gained more insight into the business and fashion industries, giving us a clearer perception of our future career pathways.

On the first day, we were given a tour around the company where we visited different departments, which gave us a glimpse into a professional workplace and an idea of how the company operates. Miss Schmith was kind to explain the different aspects of her work and we learnt a lot about current fashion trends and the process of developing a new collection of clothing.

Others in the team then introduced us to market research. We visited a variety of shops and boutiques in Sham Shui Po and Tsim Sha Tsui in search of inspirations for the latest fashion trends and designs. This allowed us to learn bargaining and price negotiation skills with shop owners. We also learnt to focus on details to spot unique patterns and cuttings on clothes, which enhanced our observation skills.

The practical experience in a real working environment helped us to learn more about business communications and how different departments co-operate to finish a project. The week was indeed invaluable and we are grateful to have been given this amazing learning opportunity.

Mentor: Ms. Ivy Lam (Head of CEO’s Office, SOGO) (Treasury Operations Department)

Jenny Wong & Kelly Law

On 18th and 19th July, 2018, we were granted the opportunity to undergo a job shadowing program at Sogo’s Treasury Operations Department. Through this experience, we have learned more on the daily operations of a company, as well as different investment products. Our mentors, Miss Ivy Lam and Miss Jacqueline Wong also discussed updated information and knowledge with us to help us understand how politics would affect market trends and the whole economy. We observed the daily work of updating portfolios and market prices as an Investment Manager as well.

Apart from this, our mentors provided invaluable insights on our future career paths. They encouraged us by sharing their own previous work experiences to inspire us on our future careers.

Overall, this was a crucial time for us to learn more about finance and our future careers. We thank our school for granting us with this valuable learning opportunity.

Mentor: Ms. Ivy Lam (Head of CEO’s Office, SOGO) (Retail)

Natalie Wong & Daphne Wu

From August 13-14 2018, we had the opportunity to shadow Ms. Winnie Cheung, a supervisor at Sogo Department Store, to better understand the retail industry. Through this experience, we learned a lot about how a supervisor manages different departments and ensures the smooth running of business.

Being very friendly and patient, our mentor taught us a lot about the importance of effective communication in a large department store. This experience allowed us to know more about what it was like to cooperate with others in the working environment. During the job shadowing, we observed how the supervisor managed to solve the problem when a customer was not satisfied with the services provided. We learnt that communication and patience was the key to solve the problem. We were both very glad when we could fulfill the needs of the customers. For example, when they were looking for some particular stationery, we were able to offer help and guide them the way to find the products they wanted.

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to observe how a department operates. This has definitely provided some guidance for our future career plans.
