A 2-hour job shadowing on 14 July 2023 is short yet rewarding. Our mentor patiently talked us through the marketing cycle, from production to distribution, which consists of many interdepartmental parties. We also learned more about the in-house duty and the contractor’s distribution of work, respectively. One of the most fascinating parts is that Base Creative is responsible for the 1881 Heritage annual Christmas Decorations.

During the job shadowing, we were invited to sit in the conference meeting and discuss the impression of a typical role in this field. Through our mentor’s sharing, we realized that in order to organize an event smoothly and effectively, communication between colleagues plays a vital role in ensuring everyone is on the same track. Therefore, marketing requires excellent leadership skills and a humble attitude to listen to differing opinions. We are grateful for this valuable learning opportunity and wish to join more job shadowing programs related to business in the future.

This job shadowing experience was exceptional amongst the rest as I had to be much more aware of my “people skills”. In the music industry, my mentor – the CEO of HKS, Ms Yang – stressed the importance of memory and communicative skills to connect with artists and musicians globally.

My meeting with the German conductor, Clemens Schuldt, magnified the concern of “breaking the ice”, where we had to find something in common to begin small talk quickly. Becoming a reliable and flexible manager in this field requires knowing the artists’ background and logistics, including accommodations, rehearsal venues, and schedules like the back of their hand. As a result, this shadowing experience became an actual test of my management skills. I have honed my social and communicative talents and am grateful for this opportunity!

From 1 - 4 August, I was given the opportunity to work as an assistant editor. A brief introduction to the firm itself was given in the beginning, allowing me to better understand its operation and management.

During the first two days, I was asked to proofread and review the content of various editions of English textbooks for primary schools, as well as creating excel and word documents that consolidated resources and reference needed for each book chapter and topic, making teaching and learning more convenient for teachers and students. The remaining days were spent editing, something I rarely touch. By extracting audio files for listening sections from textbooks, the experience enabled me to learn how to structure multiple audios into a cohesive piece while paying closer attention to details.

My taste of work at Pearson provided a great medium for me to observe a plethora of aspects of business and education, including workplace culture and interactions with clients, hence strengthening my passion in business-related careers.

During the one week of job shadowing (21-25 August 2023) at Pearson Portfolio Team, we had the opportunity to engage in several tasks, including testing out the new online teaching platform, testing for the e-learning app for students, printing and sorting out textbooks into different packs with labels stuck on, downloading online resources from Pearson and reorganise in excel files etc.

We were also given a precious chance to follow the portfolio team on two outings where we could observe how the team presented their new products to different schools.

The above-mentioned tasks have provided us with numerous valuable teachings, especially while we had hands-on experience testing the new online platform. We had to identify different potential issues and mark them down, enabling us to gain insights into the user's experience.

As a whole, this one week of job shadowing has significantly deepened our understanding of the intricacies of the education publishing industry. We are truly grateful for what we have been given during this experience. This teaching will always be lifelong and allow us to be better equipped for the future.

The 3-day job shadowing at Sino United Publishing (SUP), a firm specialising in textbook production, was an immensely gratifying and enlightening experience.

We are grateful for the chance to witness first-hand the intricate processes involved in textbook creation. From the initial research and content development to the meticulous editing and design stages, we gained a profound appreciation for the immense effort that goes into producing educational materials. Witnessing the dedication and expertise of the professionals involved in every step of the production chain was inspiring.

Observing the business's day-to-day operations provided invaluable insights into how a successful enterprise is run. We learned about the importance of effective teamwork, strategic decision-making, and adaptability to market demands. Witnessing the dynamic interplay between various departments, such as editorial, design, marketing, and distribution, reinforced the significance of coordination and communication within an organisation.

We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to job shadow at a textbook production firm. It was an insightful experience that highlighted the complexity of textbook creation and provided a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of a successful business.

During our three-day job shadowing experience at the book fair, we learned how SUP's marketing team used promotional strategies to increase media coverage and attract visitors to our booth.

Our responsibility would be to assist customers with gift redemption, which involved interacting with them, helping them redeem their gifts at various prices, and promoting our membership and social media platforms. These interactions honed our communication skills and helped us learn how to engage customers effectively. Additionally, we pumped balloons and delivered them to children. The balloons' visual impacts made them an effective tool for catching children's and families' attention, aiding us to reach specific types of consumers and raising our company's visibility at the book fair.

Learning about business and education through working at the book fair was rewarding and valuable for us. Knowing how to craft an appealing message to entice consumers, the job shadowing experience allows us to observe an array of marketing aspects, strengthening our enthusiasm for pursuing a career path in business-related areas in the future.

I was privileged to participate in the Youth Square Management Experience Programme hosted by New World Facilities Management. The program took place from August 22nd to 28th and began with introductions and ice-breaking activities to foster camaraderie among colleagues. We were then introduced to the various departments, including operations, facilities management, and the Y-Loft.

From the second day, I was assigned to the Facilities Management Department. We had the opportunity to explore the building and familiarize ourselves with its green and barrier-free facilities. Our task was to provide suggestions for further enhancing their effectiveness. Additionally, industry professionals guided us through different plant rooms, providing valuable insights into the building's core areas. The day concluded with a visit to the controller room, where we engaged in a simulated trapped lift rescue scenario, gaining perspectives from security personnel and users.

On the third and fourth days, we visited K11 Atelier, K11 Musea, and The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre under our company's purview. Knowledgeable guides explained managing these venues under sustainable regulations and utilizing their unique advantages to improve service quality.

The final day included visiting the rooftop aquaponics section and participating in a building patrol alongside the security guard. Each participant also delivered a presentation summarizing their learnings from the program, followed by a recorded interview to conclude the program.

I am grateful to the school for providing me with this invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience. Under the guidance of our mentor, the program has equipped me with valuable skills and prepared me for future career endeavors.

I am immensely grateful to be a part of the Operations Department, where I could learn how shows and competitions are organized. I understood that organizing an event involves a lot of procedures and communication between different team members. I was also given a chance to experience the work of an event usher, in which I learned to notice little details to improve customer service.

This program taught me that different industries can provide unique and impressive experiences. Whether it's operations, engineering, or the arts, each industry has its own brilliant and meaningful aspects of work. No matter which industry you are working in, you will gain rewarding experiences. Without the help of ushers and the dedicated staff at Youth Square, events held in Y Studio and Y Theatre would never run smoothly. The efforts of all staff members should never be overlooked or underestimated.
