On 14 February 2023, we visited the Civil Engineering and Development Building, shadowing Ms Carrie Cheung, Technical Secretary of Geotechnical Engineering Office, Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), HKSAR. Throughout the event encompassing both the sophisticated technicalities of geotechnical engineering and on-site inspection, we gained more insights into the diversity and versatility of the occupation.

The morning session started off with an interactive session about the historical development and state-of-the-art innovations in assisting its relevant tasks. Then we applied our newly-acquired knowledge onto a real-life case, leading on to the afternoon period where we experienced first-hand the examination and evaluation process of the aforementioned site.

Interacting with geotechnical engineers at the emergency room of CEDD provided valuable insights into their work process and the challenges they face in slope construction projects. In addition, the site visits were eye-opening, as we observed first-hand the intricacies of ensuring safety and stability in such projects.

After the job shadowing, we were intrigued by the prospect of conducting a laboratory test. For example, being able to assess and analyze the characteristics of the soil enables engineers to make informed decisions regarding factors such as site selection, construction techniques, and necessary soil stabilization methods. On the other hand, working as a civil engineer would undoubtedly be interesting and fulfilling as it contributes to the foundation of construction projects through precise and accurate soil testing.

Mentor: Ms. Kiki Kam (Thales-Computer Engineering)

On 25 to 26 July, we participated in a job shadowing program on computer engineering at Thales Transport and Security (Hong Kong) Limited. First, we were given a brief presentation about Thales and how the company works (regarding the process of system development) and the meaning of different terms used in their process. Then, we visited their workspace where we got to see their testing platform, innovation hub and meeting rooms. We learnt a lot about research and development, project management, and most of all, our mentor Ms Kam was patient to teach and guide us to complete the tasks for input validation.

On the second day, we were given the chance to use the simulation of the MTR to test the APG on each platform for the project MTR1166B-3016. We had to follow the steps on a test sheet and fill in a report about the unit test. We also did a final presentation by sharing our experiences over the past two days.

In a nutshell, the job shadowing program was an eye-opening experience to us in pursuing a career in computer engineering.
