Health care- Physiotherapy
Mentor: Mr Benny Wong(Healing Hands Physiotherapy Centre (Tsim Sha Tsui))
Hilda Tse
I went to Healing Hands Physiotherapy Centre on the 19th of July for a job shadowing experience related to physiotherapy. I had the precious opportunity to observe a total of 9 patients from different age groups, ranging from teenagers to adults. During the job shadowing, I had the chance to learn about the physiotherapist's communication with the patients and his daily routine with his assistant. Typically, the physiotherapist would ask the patient about their condition before starting the treatment.
Furthermore, I learned how the physiotherapist demonstrates his care and helps alleviate patient fears and concerns. For instance, one of the patients was slightly scared about cupping and scraping. The physiotherapist tried very hard to explain the theory behind the treatments and to comfort the patient. This also reinforces the importance of providing comfort and reassurance towards patients, as well as giving me a brief idea of the qualities a physiotherapist should hold.
In addition to learning by observing treatments, I also had the opportunity to learn from the physiotherapist’s assistant. She had addressed my questions regarding the functions, names of certain equipments, providing me with a more concrete and precise understanding of the medical and physical procedures. This experience provided me with more information and conditions about what I might encounter if I study physiotherapy in university and will certainly be useful in the future.

We are sincerely grateful to have Dr Benson Cheng from “Kagina Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre” as our mentor and advisor throughout our job shadowing session. Over the span of these 4 days, our group has learnt a lot regarding the knowledge about physiotherapy such as the use of different therapies, for instance, shockwave therapy, ice therapy, and electrotherapy. We also had the chance to experience what it is like to work in a clinical setting and be able to observe Dr Cheng treating his patients with different equipment, such as using the techniques of stretching or acupuncture to help relieve the pain and tension in the muscles. Not just about physiotherapy, we also learnt how to be an exceptional and professional healthcare providers by observing how the clinic works and the routine of a physiotherapist. This experience has certainly provided insights into the career path of physiotherapy and deepened our interest in this subject.
After these 4 days, we are sure that we obtained precious advice from Dr Cheng and are more certain about our future career choices. Once again, we are thankful that we get to learn a lot from Dr Benson Cheng and all the clinical staff in Kagina.
