Mentor: Dr. Meika Cheong

This is a valuable opportunity to job shadow Dr. Cheong, a general dentist on 19th July, 2018. Dr. Cheong specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of various oral conditions and works in the Health & Care Dental Clinic in Sheung Wan.
On the day of job-shadowing, Dr. Cheong was very busy and barely had breaks to rest. Yet, I could observe various clinical dental procedures on the day, including filling in a cavity, extracting a tooth and dental scaling. Dr. Cheong also considerately explained the principles of all the steps of the treatment and the prevention of certain oral conditions. The precision and patience needed in the job were observed and those were scarcely manifested in textbooks or any sources that I can generally reach. Moreover, Dr. Cheong was very professional and empathetic in the communication with the patients. I first knew that communication skills are essential to a dentist. Usually, Dr. Cheong explained the conditions of the patient’s oral health and then would kindly give suitable advice for the treatment with all the pros and cons listed. During the clinical procedures, Dr. Cheong would calm down the feelings of the patients, especially children, and also explained the procedures in a step-wise manner. As the patients’ age varied from 5 to 60, I was able to discover different ways to communicate and soothe the feelings of patients. Furthermore, Dr. Cheong and the nurse were very welcome to all my questions and initiatively told me some facts about the procedures, appliances and even career. I am truly thankful to them. Most of all, the job-shadowing experience has really given me a firmer conviction to reach my goal of becoming a dentist.

Mentor: Dr. Abby Wu

On 16 August 2018, we were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to job shadow an orthodontist who works in a private dental clinic in Central. Under the mentorship of Dr. Abby Wu, we were able to gain deeper understanding in orthodontics and this broadened our knowledge in the dental field.
We were fortunate to observe patients having their braces fixed. In the consultations, we observed how patient Dr. Wu was when she explained the procedures to the patients. We were particularly inspired by Dr. Wu’s meticulousness and professionalism in her work. Dr. Wu also showed us orthodontic-related animation which helped us to gain insight of orthodontic procedures.
We would like thank Dr. Wu for her sharing in the job-shadowing session. We would also like to thank St. Paul’s Convent School Careers team for giving us this opportunity. This unforgettable experience has enhanced our interest in dentistry and has motivated us to work hard in our future studies to achieve our goals.
