Mentor: Dr. Meika Cheong

I feel lucky to have had the valuable opportunity to job shadow Dr. Meika Cheong on 25th August, 2017. My mentor, Dr. Cheong, is a general dental practitioner who works in a private dental clinic in Sheung Wan. Being a busy day, I had the chance to observe the dental checkups of 17 patients. It was indeed a great learning experience for me as I could actually observe the clinical procedures in dental treatments, rather than merely reading about it textbooks. I was fortunate to have observed dental procedures from a close range as my mentor permitted me to stand beside her. She also explained each step carefully so that I may have a clearer picture of the nature of work involved. I was truly impressed by Dr. Cheong's patience and empathy towards her patients as she explained every step of the treatment to them in a thorough manner. This mentorship experience has enhanced my interest in dentistry and I plan to work hard to achieve my goals.

Mentor: Dr Abby Wu

On August 28, 2017, we had the opportunity to job shadow Dr. Abby Wu, an orthodontist with a private practice. Such exposure into the dental field was a great learning experience for us, giving us a deeper understanding of the work and daily routine of a dentist.
Seeing Dr. Wu communicate with her patients with calm and ease made us understand the importance of doctor patient relationship. We were particularly inspired by the fact that Dr. Wu talked to her anxious patients in a friendly manner while a high level of concentration and professionalism in her work. We also watched and appreciated the dentistry-related animation videos that Dr. Wu used to explain dental information and procedures to the patients.
We feel very grateful to have had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Wu for a day. After this job shadowing experience, our resolve to work in the health care industry is further strengthened and we will continue to work hard in our studies to achieve our goal.
