Mentor: Dr. Abby Wu

We had a memorable experience during our job-shadowing session at an orthodontist’s private dental clinic in Central on the 13th of August. Under the mentorship of Dr. Abby Wu, we had acquired a lot from the three-hour session.

To begin with, Dr. Wu provided us with a brief overview about orthodontics and showed us orthodontic-related animation, which helped us gain a more in-depth understanding about dentistry and her specialty. Moreover, we observed how Dr. Wu performed consultations with her patients; her professionalism along with her empathy to help patients inspired us. Throughout Dr. Wu’s patient guidance, we had broadened our knowledge in the dental field.

We would like to thank Dr. Wu and St Paul’s Convent School’s Careers Team for this valuable opportunity. Not only had this experience enhanced our interest in studying dentistry, but it had also provided us with a goal that we would work hard to achieve.

From 14th July to 17th July, I was really honoured to have the opportunity to participate in the Healthy Smile Cambodia Service Trip organised by the Hong Kong Dental Association.

During the 4-day trip, more than 1000 students in Tep Pranam Primary and Secondary School, Cambodia received dental treatments. I was able to observe the dentists’ work closely and had assisted them in various parts of the service, including charting and material mixing. Even though the environment was not pleasant, and tools were insufficient, all dentists and student volunteers worked wholeheartedly and passionately to help the patients improve their oral conditions.

This was undoubtedly a treasurable and meaningful experience for me. Through the dentists’ guidance, I had not only broadened my horizons, but also gained comprehensive understandings on different dental procedures and the management of dental equipment. I also learnt to appreciate and give thanks to the high accessibility of dental care in Hong Kong. Last but not least, I had to thank the school for nominating me and giving me such a precious chance to join this unforgettable trip.

Mentor: Dr. Meika Cheong

Winsome Liu

On 9 August 2019, I was very fortunate to shadow Dr Meika Cheong, a general dentist, at Health & Care Dental Clinic. It was a rewarding and valuable opportunity for me to have a glimpse of the work of a dentist and it broadened my knowledge in the dental field.

During the job shadowing, I was able to witness how Dr Cheong patiently explains the clinical dental procedures to the patients while providing comfort and reassurance. Dr Cheong communicated with patients with empathy and explained the procedures without the use of dental jargon, which improved communication with patients but can also help to avoid potential misunderstandings. I was particularly inspired by Dr Cheong’s professionalism in her work. Furthermore, Dr Cheong showed me dental computed tomography (CT) scan 3D images, which surprised me in how technology facilitates advances in medical diagnostics and treatment.

The experience has assured my future career prospective and I am more motivated to work hard to pursue a career in dentistry.
