Mentor: Dr. Tony Lam (Sustainability Department, Arup)
Maisie Chan
On 21st and 22nd August, I had an opportunity to job shadow Dr. Tony Lam at the sustainability department of Arup, an engineering company. In the morning of the first day, I was briefly introduced to the background and the work of Arup. Then, I was led to the sustainability department and was introduced to the groupmates of Dr. Lam. In the afternoon, Dr. Lam guided me to tour around the office. It was an interesting experience to be able to visit a library of an engineering company other than the public ones or those in schools. On the second day, I was very lucky to have the chance to see how a proposal was prepared through discussion among staffers. The other members were also very kind that they explained their work thoroughly and provided me with some insights on university life, job of engineers and information about engineer license. These will be very helpful for my university application and my future plan on career.

This past summer I had the opportunity to take part in a 2-day job shadowing programme with the Thales Transport and Security (Hong Kong) Limited on 13 and 14 August 2018. At the start, my mentor, Mr. Batson Cheng, gave me a brief overview about the business of the company, followed by touring around the office. After that, Mr. Cheng assigned me to shadow the Head of Software Discipline, Mr. Wayne Ng, as I had revealed my interest in software system. I attended several meetings chaired by Mr. Ng, with his subordinates reporting to him the current progress of developing a software system. I learnt a lot from the meetings - ability to collaborate productively and communicate at all levels are essential skills of IT professionals as they have to convey their ideas and deals among peers. On the second day, I shadowed an intern and was able to observe how she carried out testing of software functions of a computer system. I was also fortunate to have lunch gatherings with the CEO, my mentor and the department heads. Being able to directly share my interests in the computing field with these IT professionals was an unforgettable opportunity. All in all, this job shadowing programme was a useful way for me to learn about the field that I will be pursuing at university.

My mentor is an arbitrator and director for planning and engineering services. I had an opportunity to join a conference where all participants were female engineers. The conference was organized by the committee members of the Light House Club, a charity which provides financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families. Topics such as rights of female engineers were raised in the meeting. Although I could only be an observer and might not be able to join in their discussion, I felt their enthusiasm in their jobs despite problems they may encounter. I am grateful to have this opportunity and the patience of my mentor made my experience even better. I would also like to express my gratitude towards the involved parties for organizing such an incredible event.
