Mentor: Mr Kelvin Fong, Head of ICS System Department (Thales Transport and Security (H.K.) Ltd)
Josephine Choy & Claudia Ng
On August 1, Claudia Ng and I had the opportunity to job shadow Mr Kelvin Fong at Thales Transport and Security (Hong Kong) Limited. Upon our arrival at the office, Mr Batson Cheng, Head of Human Resources, gave us an brief introduction about the company and its operations. This was followed by an office tour. We were also briefed about each department team and their responsibilities, for example, the bidding team for soliciting new projects, the engineering team for construction operations. Later on, we shadowed our mentor, Mr. Kelvin Fong, to several different meetings in which he sought updates on various projects, including one MTR project. Each meeting lasted about one hour.
Later on in the afternoon, we had the chance to observe testing of the MTR systems of Lok Ma Chau station. To our surprise, we found out that many MTR systems are operated by Thales instead of MTR itself. The visit to the computer programming room was useful to understand the significance of powerful computer systems in this engineering field. We learnt some basic knowledge of coding and how the network structure works.
Overall, we found the atmosphere at the company to be abuzz with activity. Although the work seemed complex and overwhelming, yet it was very interesting, making us realize the value of problem solving in the engineering field. Overall, our job shadowing experience was quite inspiring, motivating us to pursue a career in the field of engineering.

My job shadowing assignment under Mr. Henry Ng at Cybersecurity Department of Thales Transport and Security (Hong Kong) Limited was indeed an eye opening experience. Although the job-shadowing program was brief, I did gain a lot from it. One of my assignments, to figure out real wifi from a fake one, was quite interesting. I learnt that hackers use fake wifi to remotely collect data from one’s computer when he or she is connected to one of them. Moreover, I was also introduced to the new concept of fin-tech. Through these assignments, I learned a lot of new things such as about Bitcoin, electronic money, and artificial intelligence. Lastly, my mentor taught me about various hacking methods, such as malware and spear phishing. This experience helped me appreciate the importance of cyber security. I understand now that knowing how to secure one’s computer is a necessary skill which would be indispensable in the future. Through this job shadowing program, I now know more about the field that I will be pursuing at university.

Our exciting job shadowing experience took place from August 8 to 9, 2017 under the mentorship of Mr. Thomas Yeung, the chairman of Environmental International Limited, and Mr. Eric Ho, the Product Application Manager at Environmental International Limited.
On the first day of the program, Mr. Yeung and Mr. Ho gave us an introduction of the business operations of their company. We also visited Domain Mall in Yau Tong to see the deodorizing system installed there. We gradually understood the operations of the system and the difficulties faced when applying it in a real situation.
On the second day, Mr. Ho discussed with us some careers that involved Environmental Engineering and Environmental Sciences. He also talked about his own working experience at the company. Afterwards, we were delighted to visit a client's restaurant in Central where we saw the grease trap tank in the kitchen and understood the importance of the system.

Job shadowing experience took place on 24th August, 2017 under the mentorship of Ms. Cordia Yu at BK Asia Pacific Limited. My mentor, a chartered civil engineer, explained her daily routine and the difficulties that she encountered in this field. She also discussed with us her reasons for studying engineering. After listening to her advice and learning about her experiences, I feel that I have a better understanding of the work of a chartered civil engineer. Ms. Yu also introduced me to a famous charity The Lighthouse Club which aims to provide financial assistance to those in need within the construction industry through its membership funds and proceeds raised from regular events. After listening to her, I was motivated to learn more about this charity. Overall, this job-shadowing program has undoubtedly given me a better insight towards my possible future career.
