Mentor: Ms. Melody Wong (Arup)

Madeline Leung

I had the opportunity to take part in a job-shadowing programme at the Building Sustainability Department of Arup on 29th and 30th July. On the morning of the first day, I was introduced to the firm, including its work, structure and core aims and values. Then, I was led to the Building Sustainability Department, where I was introduced to my mentor and the rest of the group. Throughout the programme, I learnt about the work involved in improving the sustainability of a building project and the wellbeing of its users, including some certifications and the resources used in running simulations. I also learnt about the stages of a project in construction, and the role that the department plays within the project. It was interesting to experience the open office design and the workplace culture there. Everyone was very helpful and some shared their experiences at university and offered advice on career planning.

Mentor: Ms. Cordia Yu (Civil Engineering)

Clare Chau, Carmen Lam & Moreen Ho

On 9 July, our mentor Ms. Cordia Yu invited us to a seminar organized by the Lighthouse Club. Successful female engineers shared their stories with us and it was very enlightening. They mentioned about the difficulties they have encountered as a female engineer, such as how they might not receive the same treatment as male engineers. Near the end of the seminar, we had the opportunity to chat with some of them and gain some further insight regarding our future career paths.

On 31 August, we are invited to the office of BK Asia Pacific. There we had a fruitful and enjoyable chat with our mentor Ms. Cordia Yu. We have discussed about topics like the prospect of civil engineering, the work of civil engineers, and different pathways after studying civil engineering. We understood that despite civil engineering being labelled as a job better for men, girls still have their own advantage over men, and should not back off due to this. Ms Yu also explained that taking engineering in universities does not mean that we could only be an engineer, but can also apply for jobs like engineering consultant and handling disputes.

Mentor: Mr. Kelvin Fong (Thales, Computer Engineering)

Cindy Yeung, Helen Chui & Christina Chan

On 14 to 16 August, the three of us participated in a job shadowing program on computer engineering at Thales Transport and Security (Hong Kong) Limited. The first day began with a visit around their workspace where we got to see their testing platform, innovation hub and meeting rooms. We were then given a brief presentation regarding the process of system development, and a run through of different terms used in their process. Afterwards, we were taken to observe and given a small rundown on the role of software engineers, and were shown some hardware components of a server. We learnt a lot regarding research and development, project management, and our mentor, Mr. Fong, was very generous to share insights on the variety in computer engineering.

On the second day, we had the opportunity to shadow and observe a group going through the process of developing a software project. Then, we went to their Wan Chai office to observe their cyber security processes, which included a demonstration of a penetration test. We were also allowed to see how their logging system worked, and were given a presentation on the role of cyber security and the way they carried out their work for various different operations.

Overall, this job shadowing program was very insightful to us towards pursuing a career in computer engineering.
