Mentor: Dr. Amy Chang (specialist in Clinical Oncology, Gleneagles Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital)

Michelle Ng

In August 2018, I spent two days shadowing Dr. Amy Chang, a specialist in Clinical Oncology, at Gleneagles Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital. During the session, I was given the opportunity to observe routine check-ups with cancer patients and visit the chemotherapy and radiotherapy centres. Dr. Chang also shared with me her experience as a doctor and gave me an idea of the responsibilities and work of a doctor. It has made me realize not only biological and chemical knowledge is vital in pursuing a career in the medical field, teamwork, leadership, communication skills, patience and time management are also essential. Her passion in helping the patients also inspired me how meaningful it is to save lives and enhanced my determination in utilizing my knowledge to help people in need.

The experience has assured my future career prospective and I will work even harder to become a doctor in the future.

Mentor: Dr. Clara Poon (Renal Physician, Princess Margaret Hospital)

Charlotte So

I was very honoured to be given a chance to shadow Dr Clara Poon, a renal physician, from the 24th to 27th August 2018 at Princess Margaret Hospital.

During the job shadowing, I encountered many patients with chronic renal diseases who have to go to the hospital for kidney dialysis a few times a week. This process puts on a heavy strain on both the patients and their family. In Hong Kong, there are thousands of patients waiting for a kidney transplant every day, but only very few patients can get a transplant. This leads me to understand the importance of organ donation, as it is the best way to give patients a good quality of life.

Also, I was fortunate enough to observe a catheter insertion surgery for peritoneal dialysis during my job shadowing. This procedure allows patients to cleanse their blood without a dialysis machine, so that they could resume their daily work shortly.

Through shadowing Dr Poon for a few days, I have gained deeper insight into the medical field and I am more motivated to work hard to pursue a future career in medicine.

Mentor: Dr. May Leung (Anaesthetist, Queen Mary Hospital Student Volunteer Attachment Programme)

Ingrid Luk & Hilary Tse

In August 2018, we had the valuable opportunity to shadow Dr May Leung, a reputed anaesthetist, for two weeks in Queen Mary Hospital. During the attachment programme, we observed a range of surgeries including skin graft surgery and neurosurgery. It was indeed a precious experience. Not only did we gain more insight into the distinct role of an anaesthetist, but also developed a better understanding on the importance of teamwork and effective communication between different health practitioners.

During our visit to the ward, we were able to witness how Dr Leung patiently explains the medical procedures to the patients while relieving their anxiety and insecurity before the surgery. This taught us that in addition to the medical treatments offered by a doctor, emotional support is just as crucial.

Moreover, Dr Leung shared her life story with us, from being a medical student, receiving specialty training to becoming a doctor. Her journey has proved that being a doctor requires more than extensive knowledge of medicine. It also requires passion and determination. Shadowing Dr Leung has definitely inspired us to strive for the best and dedicate a career in the medical field.

Mentor: Dr. Wong Yee Ling, Theresa (Paediatrician)

Jessica Lam

In August 2018, I was very fortunate to job shadow Dr. Wong Yee Ling, Theresa for half day. Dr. Theresa Wong is a reputed paediatrician and she also specializes in paediatric neurology. The experience is absolutely invaluable and inspiring. I observed paediatric consultations, such as regular check-ups and vaccinations for young children, as well as thorough examinations and medicine prescription for patients.

Throughout the experience, I have definitely gained new insights into the responsibilities of a doctor. I have learned that being a doctor is not only about rescuing lives and curing diseases, but more importantly, caring and communicating to each and every single patient. Also, I have understood more about the further studies in the medical field, from doing an internship to choosing one’s own paths and becoming a specialist, in which the entire journey really takes a long time. Dr. Wong has inspired me to work harder and the experience has enhanced my passion in the medical field.

Mentor: Dr. Timmy Au (Surgeon, Queen Mary Hospital Student Volunteer Attachment Programme)

Sophia Chang

I participated in the Queen Mary Hospital Student Volunteer Attachment Programme from 2nd to 24th August, shadowing Dr. Timmy Au. It was truly a valuable experience as I had the chance to work in various wards and the operation theatre of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, gaining a deeper insight into the work of medical professionals from day to day.

Working in the C5 and D5 wards, I witnessed how everyone held fast to their own positions despite of the hectic work inside the ward, through which I understood that everyone is of equal importance in helping patients to recover. Similarly, though the work assigned to me might seem inconsequential, I know that it is equally important in assisting the smooth operation of the ward.

Working in the operation theatre, I had the chance to observe a vascular operation which left a huge impact on me. I grasped the importance of accurate communications between doctors and assistants during a surgery. I also appreciated the doctors’ dedication in saving lives.

It was really a valuable learning experience working in a hospital, observing the work of doctors, surgeons and nurses. I truly admired their commitment to their work and this has motivated me to work harder at the moment so that I can contribute to the healthcare profession in the future.

Mentor: Dr. Lorraine Sinn (Hong Kong Women’s Imaging)

Rachel Lam, Locani Wong

On 22 to 24 August 2018, we are privileged to shadow Dr Lorraine Sinn, a radiologist, at Hong Kong Women’s Imaging.  It is a rewarding and valuable opportunity for us to have a glimpse of the work of a radiologist. Throughout these 3 days, we had an eye-opening experience by observing clinical diagnosis, ultrasound imaging, 3D mammogram, tomosynthesis guided biopsy and vacuum assisted biopsy. We also had a chance to communicate with her team to know more about their routines and duties in the clinic. We were deeply impressed by Dr. Sinn’s attitude and passion towards her job. Dr Sinn is very friendly and is willing to share her personal experiences in her life journey as a medical student and doctor.  We admire her empathy for patients, as well as her perseverance in providing the best treatment whenever possible. The programme has widened our horizons and we are more determined to be a doctor in the future.
