On 24 July, 2017, we were lucky to have had the opportunity to job shadowing a professional physiotherapist at Healing Hands Physiotherapy Centre. Under the mentorship of Ms. Anson So, a registered Physiotherapist and a clinical educator in Physiotherapy, we were able to understand the functions and workings of several machines/equipment used in acupuncture treatment and electrotherapy. In order for us to gain elementary understanding, we even got the chance to try one of the machines for electrotherapy. It was quite an unforgettable experience as we got a firsthand experience of what the treatment is like.

Moreover, we had the opportunity to observe 7 patients who visited the centre that day. Our mentor demonstrated useful questioning techniques to assess the patients’ level of injury or recovery progress. For example, how long did the pain last for? How did you feel in today’s session as compared to the last treatment? Such questions and comparisons allowed the Physiotherapist to come up with the pain intensity level or percentage of pain felt by the patient. Apart from this, we also learnt that respecting patient privacy was very important. Therefore, patients were asked for their consent in advance and respect their wishes.

Lastly, seeing patients on the path to recovery through physiotherapy made us realize the importance a physiotherapist’s job. After this experience, we have gained a better understanding about Physiotherapy and it has motivated us to consider it as a career in the future!
