Mentor: Ms. Wong Ching (Coaching - basketball)

Ellen Kong

On the 21st and 24th of August, I was honoured to shadow my mentor, Coach Wong Ching. During the training sessions, I witnessed the action by the sidelines, which allowed me to have a clear view of what was happening on the court. The team was very disciplined and took matters into their own hands, such as cleaning up the court and inflating basketballs. During the drills, the coach was very attentive to details and corrected the students immediately if there were any room for improvements. I learned that after “scolding” the students, as coaches we have to explain why they got “scolded” and how they could do better. Doing so, the students were able to improve faster since they know the areas that required improvements. I also learned that it is important to maintain team discipline within the team since attitude will affect performance. It is crucial that a good team morale is upkept within the team to ensure long-term success.

After this experience, I am now more sure that choosing coaching as my future career can help spread the spirit of sports to more people.
