We had the wonderful opportunity to job shadow Mr. Albert Chan, Principal Director, LC Surveyors Ltd. We were taken to different construction sites and were allowed to observe how construction work was being performed. Though these site visits, we could understand more clearly the job of a building surveyor. Different staff members of the company explained the nature of their work to us. We were surprised to learn that building surveyors don’t always go on site but act as a bridge between the client and construction workers. It was apparent that strong communication skills were vital to the surveyor’s job to help communicate with different parties. Besides, Surveyors usually have lots of paperwork to do such as writing progress reports and drawing construction layouts. We also learnt a few pieces of jargon like ‘unauthorized building works’, which was the focus of a major project in process while we were there. Our overall experience was very enjoyable and we feel fortunate to have had exposure to a practical working environment.
