Throughout the three days of our job shadowing program in health and nutrition, we embarked on an enlightening and educational journey. We edited several PowerPoint presentations on healthy eating and lifestyle tips, which would later be used to educate the general public. This not only enhanced our understanding of nutrition but also improved our communication and teamwork skills. It was extremely fulfilling to be part of a project like this—promoting the importance of prioritising health through informed food choices, especially in a city like Hong Kong, where people are known for their fast-paced lifestyles and often neglect the value of nutritious meals.

We also participated in a cooking class for a group of children, teaching them how to make fruit spring rolls—an easy and healthy snack. We enjoyed the activity just as much as the children did. The room was filled with smiles as we wrapped a variety of fruits in rice paper sheets, leaving us with a deep sense of fulfilment.

On the final day of our program, we attended an insightful talk led by our mentor for a group of elderly participants, focusing on simple and healthy meals they could prepare on their own. It was heartwarming to witness their enthusiasm for learning and eagerness to improve their diets. We realised the importance of tailoring health messages to different age groups, as the vital connection between nutrition and well-being was a key point highlighted in our mentor’s talk.

This experience has deepened our appreciation for the role of nutrition in our lives, given its direct impact on both mental and physical health. It has also sparked our interest in pursuing a career in health education. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Health Concept and are truly grateful to our mentor for the extensive knowledge she shared and the opportunity we were given.

We were granted a valuable job shadowing opportunity at BAMBOOS. The day began with an insightful tour of BAMBOOS’ facilities, exploring classrooms, simulated hospital wards, dental and Chinese medical clinics. The experience became truly immersive when we joined local healthcare students for practical lessons. A professional tutor shared valuable knowledge about modern nursing practices, demonstrating essential skills like proper techniques for lifting and transferring patients with disabilities. We were then given the opportunity to practice these techniques ourselves under careful supervision, realising how much strength and care it required.

In the afternoon, our mentor clearly explained the profession's responsibilities and educational pathways before teaching us how to measure blood pressure and interpret results. Staff members demonstrated bone density scans and took time to thoroughly answer our questions. What stood out most was witnessing the effective teamwork among different healthcare specialists as they coordinated patient care.

This experience significantly enhanced our understanding of healthcare work. Apart from learning practical skills, we observed how collaboration and communication are fundamental to quality patient care. The programme has reinforced our interest in healthcare careers, and we are grateful for this fruitful job shadowing experience to gain such practical exposure to the field.
